ListServ Mailing Lists and Generic Email Addresses
What is a ListServ mailing list?
A mailing list allows one email address to be set up to send to multiple recipients. For example, you could have have a list called PsychMajors and have it populated with all majors in Psychology. The email could be called email@example.com. When you send a message to this address all subscribers would receive a copy. This list can be open so that anyone can send e-mail to the list, or private so that only subscribers can send to the list. CUA uses L-Soft LISTSERV as its list server. To request a LISTSERV mailing list, please submit a request through help.cua.edu.
What is a Generic Email Address?
A generic email address, also know as a distribution list, sends messages to multiple recipients. For example firstname.lastname@example.org will distribute emails to a list of people who are associated with this generic email address.
The difference? The mailing list is the more popular approach. You as the list owner can control the subscribers and of this list without putting in a request to CPIT.
