ListServ Mailing Lists and Generic Email Addresses
What is a ListServ mailing list?
A mailing list allows one email address to be set up to send to multiple recipients. For example, you could have have a list called PsychMajors and have it populated with all majors in Psychology. The email could be called email@example.com. When you send a message to this address all subscribers would receive a copy. This list can be open so that anyone can send e-mail to the list, or private so that only subscribers can send to the list. CUA uses L-Soft LISTSERV as its list server. To request a LISTSERV mailing list, please submit a request through techsupport.cua.edu.
What is a Generic Email Address?
A generic email address, also know as a distribution list, sends messages to multiple recipients. For example firstname.lastname@example.org will distribute emails to a list of people who are associated with this generic email address. To request a generic email address, please submit a request through techsupport.cua.edu.
The difference? The mailing list is the more popular approach. You as the list owner can control the subscribers of this list without putting in a request to Technology Services.
