Phone Services
CUA students are provided with an easy to use residential telephone system with local calling. CUA has partnered with PAETEC to provide optional long distance service for students who want it.
Set Up and Local Calling
All residence hall rooms are equipped with one or more fixed-line telephone voice ports that connect to the same telephone number. That is, each suite shares a single telephone number. In your move-in packet, you will find information on your specific telephone number.
Setting up your telephone for CUA's phone system is as easy as plugging your telephone into the blue port in the room.
Residents can call on-campus directly to other rooms, offices and services by dialing the last four digits of the phone exchange.
All other local calling is done by dialing 9 to get an outside line. Please note that in Maryland and Virginia, you must use the three digit area code when dialing. Washington DC is a local call, and does not require the area code.
Long Distance and International Calling
Sign Up for Long Distance Service
We know that most students have cellular phones today, but you may want to sign up for a PAETEC long distance calling card as a backup so that you can place long distance calls using campus telephones, including the voice line in your room.
To sign up, browse to the PAETEC web site (campuslink.paetec.com) and click the "Signup for Service" link. You will need to provide your CUA e-mail address and ID number. PAETEC will send you an account number and personal billing number (PBN) via e-mail.
Using PAETEC Long Distance
To place a long distance call using your PAETEC personal billing number, follow these steps.
- Dial the access code for long distance: 7
- Wait for the second dial tone.
- Dial the number you are calling: 1 + area code + phone number for domestic calls or
011 + country code + city code + phone number for international calls
- Wait for the tone, and then dial your seven digit PBN.
External web site Howtocallabroad.com provides dialing codes and instructions, time zones and phone books for all countries.
Additional information about your PAETEC account
The PAETEC customer service number is 1-800-962-4772.
Your PAETEC PBN gives you the freedom to place calls from anywhere on campus. By using your PBN, you agree to pay for all calls placed with your PBN, whether or not you made them personally. Do not share your PBN with anyone! If your PBN is lost, or you suspect that it has been stolen, contact PAETEC customer service immediately. PAETEC will disable your original PBN and assign you a new one.
You can also use your PAETEC PBN as a calling card outside of campus, but at higher rates.
PAETEC requires all subscribers to close their accounts and provide a forwarding address when they leave. This ensures that your PBN will be disabled. Until your account is closed, you are responsible for all calls placed with your PBN.
Visit the PAETEC web site (campuslink.paetec.com) and click the "Login" link to review your detailed account information, get answers to frequently asked questions and review rate information for specific calls. To log onto your account, you will need your PBN and your 11-digit account number as printed on your account statement.
Once a month, you will receive an e-mail notice that your bill has been posted to your account and is available online. You can pay your bill by credit or debit card, check by phone or by paper check or money order.
Additional details are available in the Residential Telephone Service brochure.
