Cardinal Mail

Cardinal Mail is CUA's implementation of Google Apps Education Edition.  Available exclusively to CUA students, Cardinal Mail offers greatly increased mail storage, access to Google Docs and Google Calendar, all using the popular Google Gmail interface.

All new and existing CUA students from the class of 2008 and later have a Cardinal Mail account.

Starting at the end of May 2009, Cardinal Mail will be the primary e-mail service for CUA students as part of the phased transition to Cardinal Mail. Until then, new CUA messages are still being delivered to your CUA Webmail account.

What is my e-mail address?

Your Cardinal Mail e-mail address is the same as your CUA Network user name - typically a 2-digit number followed by your last name followed by @cardinalmail.cua.edu. E.g., 00Smith@cardinalmail.cua.edu.

How do I learn about Cardinal Mail?

Please refer to the detailed FAQ for more information about Cardinal Mail. Also, Google has an extensive Google Apps Help center on their web site.

CUA Webmail

Students who were actively enrolled prior to late May 2009 may also have a CUA Webmail account. CUA Webmail is the Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) interface to the university's @cua.edu e-mail servers that provides a very similar look to that of the Microsoft Outlook desktop application.

To log onto CUA Webmail, browse to mail.cua.edu directly in your browser, or you can click the Webmail link from home.cua.edu.

Students with CUA Webmail accounts are strongly encouraged to migrate their CUA Webmail messages and address book to their Cardinal Mail account. CUA Webmail accounts will be removed in late September 2009--you must migrate your data before then as it will be permanently inaccessible after that time.

Faculty and Staff

Microsoft Outlook

University employees use the university's @cua.edu Microsoft Exchange e-mail service. Microsoft Outlook (and Microsoft Entourage for Mac OS X), part of the Microsoft Office suite, is the supported e-mail client program for use on university campus computers.

What is my e-mail address?

Your CUA e-mail address is the same as your CUA Network user name - usually your last name (possibly with one or more initials). For example, lincolna@cua.edu.

Can I use the CUA Webmail interface?

Yes. CUA Webmail is the preferred interface for accessing your university e-mail when you are not on campus. To log onto CUA Webmail, browse to mail.cua.edu directly in your browser, or you can click the Webmail link from home.cua.edu.

I get a lot of spam.  What can I do about it?

E-mail arriving for your @cua.edu address is filtered through an antispam appliance.  This machine automatically scans each message to determine if it might be spam.  If it is suspicious enough, the appliance modifies the Subject: line of the message to prepend the phrase "[Spam]".  By doing this, possible spam messages are marked so that you can determine how to handle them.

One useful technique is to write an e-mail filter rule to move all such messages into the Deleted Items or other Outlook folder so that they are not mixed in with your regular Inbox messages.

You can adjust your settings on the antispam appliance to control the level of filtering applied to messages addressed to you.

I deleted a message. How do I get it back?

When you delete an e-mail message from your @cua.edu Inbox, it is moved to your Deleted Items folder. When you empty your Deleted Items folder in Outlook, your deleted messages are no longer accessible to you. However, these messages are retained on the server for 30 days, and may be recovered. To recover a message:

  • In the CUA Webmail interface, select Options. Then scroll down to the Recover Deleted Items section and click the View Items button.

  • In Microsoft Outlook, highlight your Deleted Items folder in your folder list. Then select menu item Tools, Recover Deleted Items.

Note: After 30 days, deleted messages cannot be recovered. Therefore, it is important to recover immediately any message that was deleted in error.
