E-mail Help Resources
Accessing your CUA E-mail
To access your campus e-mail, browse to the CUA Webmail page at mail.cua.edu. You can also get there from the Home@CUA page by clicking the Webmail link at the top of the page.
Click on "Log On to Outlook Web Access to begin." Type your network logon username and passphrase in the dialog box that appears, and click OK. Your CUA inbox will open up.
(A reminder: you have two (2) accounts at CUA. The first account is your Cardinal Station account. The second account is your CUA network account; you should use this account when logging into Webmail.)
While the CUA Webmail site can be accessed from most web browsers, including Firefox, Netscape and Safari, the best interface is obtained by using Microsoft Internet Explorer on Windows.
Students. Webmail is the recommended method for students to access their CUA e-mail. Official university notices will be sent to your CUA e-mail address, so it is important to check your CUA e-mail regularly.
Faculty and Staff. Faculty and staff who use a workstation connected to the campus network may use the Microsoft Outlook program to access their campus e-mail.
Filtering Out Unwanted E-mail Messages
Unsolicited direct marketing electronic messages, better known as "spam," have become an increasing problem in recent years. CUA employs an antispam appliance that tags e-mail messages that are suspected of being spam with special text in the Subject line.
You can configure Microsoft Outlook to automatically send these messages to the Deleted Items or other folder using easy, step by step instructions to create an Outlook Rule.
You can adjust your settings on the antispam appliance to control the level of filtering applied to messages addressed to you.
Managing Mailbox Size
Your campus e-mail is kept in a mailbox that is stored on the University's e-mail server. The server enforces an upper limit on the size of a mailbox in order to maintain enough resources for everyone.
There are steps that you can take to manage the size of your Outlook mailbox, including sorting messages by size and deleting larger ones that are no longer needed, cleaning out Sent Items, regularly emptying the Deleted Items folder and, for faculty and staff who have a desktop computer assigned to them, archiving messages to the local computer.
Setting up Microsoft Outlook for POP/IMAP access
Students, faculty or staff who are familiar with an Internet e-mail program such as those that are included in Windows, Mac OS X or Microsoft Office may set up that program to access their CUA e-mail.
(Note that this section is not applicable to faculty and staff who read e-mail with Microsoft Outlook from a workstation connected to the campus network; a special Exchange-specific Outlook configuration is used in that case.)
Setting Up Outlook for IMAP Settings Use IMAP Settings if you want to keep a copy of your messages on the server. Use this option if you also read CUA e-mail with the Webmail interface or if you are faculty or staff and use Outlook on your campus desktop to read your e-mail.
Setting Up Outlook for POP Settings Use POP Settings if you want your computer to remove messages from the server as you read them. All messages are saved to your local computer. (You can choose to keep a copy of the messages on the server, though, if you like.) This option is best if you read e-mail only from your POP e-mail program.
Find SMTP Settings for Off-Campus Use If your computer is off-campus, learn how to find the name of the SMTP server that your Internet Service Provider uses.
Mailing Lists
Catholic University faculty and staff members may request that a mailing list be created. Mailing lists are implemented via an automated list server, LISTSERV, at address listserv@lists.cua.edu.
To request a mailing list, please submit a Support Request at help.cua.edu.
Generic E-mail Addresses
Departments, schools and administrative offices may request generic e-mail addresses that distribute incoming e-mail to a short list of recipients. Publishing such generic e-mail addresses rather than the address of an individual ensures consistency in e-mail contact information over the years, especially when e-mail is being handled by student workers who may change jobs from semester to semester or who eventually graduate. To request a generic address, please PRINT and COMPLETE this form, and return it to the Information Center at 200 Leahy Hall.
