Setting up Outlook / Outlook Express for CUA Mail
- IMAP Settings

Note that while these instructions are specific to Microsoft e-mail programs, similar settings may be applied to most other e-mail programs as well.

Look around for a menu at the top of the program called Tools. Click on it, then drag the mouse downward until it highlights Accounts.

Click on Accounts.

You should now see a new window that has four tabs at the top. One of these tabs is labeled, Mail. Left click on the Mail tab.

Click Add, select Mail.

Type in your name for the following prompt: "Your Name (Display Name)": i.e. John Smith

Click next.

Type in your e-mail address for the following prompt: "Internet E-mail Address": i.e. 00smith@cua.edu

Click next.
Enter the type of server. Select IMAP

In the text area for the Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server:
If you are a student, type:
imap.studentmail.cua.edu

If you are faculty or staff, type:
imap.staffmail.cua.edu

In the text area for the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:
If your computer is on-campus: type: smtp.cua.edu
If your computer is off-campus: enter the SMTP of your Internet Service Provider.
If your computer is in ResNet: outbound e-mail is disabled.  Please use webmail to access your CUA e-mail.
Click Here for more information about sending e-mail from off-campus.

After all this, Click Next.

You will now be presented with a new window. In this window, you will be required to enter your "Internet Mail Logon".

Enter your user name. i.e. 00SMITH.

If you feel it necessary, type in your password. If not, you will be prompted to do so later.

Click Next.

You will now see this window on your screen:

connect.gif (10777 bytes)

This is where things get a bit tricky. Here you are required to select the type of Internet connection you will be using. I'm going to make it simple for you. If you are on campus, and are a faculty, staff, or student who has a network card in his/her computer, select the second option. 'Connect using my local area network (LAN)'.

If you are calling from off-campus there should be something you are aware of. It is not possible for you to gain access to your mail through these conventions, i.e. Outlook Express. The answer is simple, The Catholic University of America does not offer a Dial-up connection that checks mail this way. So in simple terms, the first options is useless here on our network. However it is possible to use, read below.

Choose the third option if you are dialing into your own Internet Service Providor. i.e. Erols, America Online, Mindspring, etc.

After connecting to any of the above mentioned ISPs, you should be able to run Outlook Express and check your email. Again, in simple terms... select 'I will establish my internet connection manually'.

If you normally double-click on your E-mail program in order to dial-up and connect to your ISP and then retrieve your E-mail, "Connect using my phone line".

Click Next once you have made your selection.

You will now be presented with a screen prompting you to press the FINISH button. Do so.

You are now presented with a new window asking you a simple question. Do you want to download the folder list for the IMAP account you just created?

If you selected LAN in the 'Network Connection' window, select Yes.

*Note: If you did not enter your password previously in the setup, you will get an error. This is not a problem. Just click OK and then enter your password.

If you selected 'I will establish my internet connection manually' or 'Connect using my phone line', choose No.

After this, close out the Internet Account window by pressing the Close button.
