Managing Spam Delivery Options

E-mail arriving for cua.edu is filtered through an antispam appliance that runs Roaring Penguin Software CanIt-PRO.  This machine automatically scans each message to determine if it might be spam.  If it is suspicious enough, the appliance modifies the Subject: line of the message to prepend the phrase "[Spam]".  By doing this, possible spam messages are marked so that you can determine how to handle them.

Spam-Scanning Levels

The appliance has recently been enhanced to allow you to specify the messages that are delivered to your mailbox based on their Spam Score.  There are five spam-scanning levels from which you can select.

  1. OptOut: you do not wish to participate in spam scanning; all messages will be delivered to your mailbox without being tagged

  2. TagOnly: the Subject line of messages with a Spam Score of 5.0 or higher will be appended with the [Spam] tag; all messages will be delivered to your mailbox

  3. Low: messages that receive a Spam Score of 15 or higher will be auto-rejected without being delivered to your mailbox; the Subject line of messages with a Spam Score of 5.0 or higher will be appended with a [Spam] [Score: n.n] tag

  4. Medium: messages that receive a Spam Score of 8.5 or higher will be auto-rejected without being delivered to your mailbox; the Subject line of messages with a Spam Score of 5.0 or higher will be appended with a [Spam] [Score: n.n] tag; this is the default level at CUA

  5. High: messages that receive a Spam Score of 5.0 or higher will be auto-rejected without being delivered to your mailbox

Important! As with any anti-spam mechanism, there is always the possibility that some legitimate e-mail may be marked as spam and, depending on your scan level, blocked from delivery. If you have concerns about this, select "OptOut" or "TagOnly," or start with the "Low" level setting, and only after ensuring that no legitimate messages are being blocked, proceed to "Medium" or "High" settings.

Changing your Spam-Scanning Level

To change your spam-scanning level, follow these steps.

  1. Browse to the university's antispam appliance and log on using your network logon account.  For security reasons, you can browse to the appliance from inside the campus network only.

  2. Select the spam-scanning level.  The default level is "Medium".

  3. Click the "Set Spam-Scanning Level" button.  Verify that the "(Current Setting)" notation moves to your newly-selected level.

  4. Click the Log Out button to log out of the appliance.
