Microsoft Silverlight

The most common reason users have problems viewing Panopto videos is that they do not have the current version of Microsoft Silverlight.  Panopto requires the most current version of Silverlight in order to play videos correctly.  Users often incorrectly assume that they have the most current version of Silverlight, so it is always a good idea to check whenever you are having problems with video playback.

How do I know if I have the most current version of Micrsoft Silverlight?

  1. Navigate to the following link in your browser:

    www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx

NOTE:  We recommend against using Internet Explorer 11, because of known difficulties.

  2. The website will attempt to assess what version of Silverlight you have.
If you have the most current version of Silverlight, you should see something like this:

And if your version of Silverlight is NOT the most current version, you should see something like this:

No matter which screen you get, the most current version of Silverlight will be listed.  This is the version you need to have in order for Panopto to play the video.

  3. To double-check your version of Silverlight, navigate to your Applications folder in the Finder.

  4. Holding down the Option key, right-click on Microsoft Silverlight and select Quick Look from the drop-down menu.

  5. A window will appear, detailing the version number of the installed Silverlight. This number should match the current version number stated on the website.
If the numbers do not match, click here to learn how to uninstal current versions and update to the newest version of Silverlight.
